For whom am I writing?

I started this newsletter as a way to share thoughts on navigating the bumpy road of parenting teenage boys. Some of this comes from my own experience as a mom of 3 teenage boys but most of it comes from my education, teaching, and clinical work as a licensed psychologist.

It is important to have community as we raise our children but there is something isolating about parenting teenage boys. We may not want to acknowledge to others the struggles we have raising our sons but we may also need support and someone who can give some guidance along the way. This newsletter is an attempt to provide information to a community while giving parents the opportunity to NOT feel so alone. I want readers to know that this is not a substitute for therapy nor is it in any way intended to be therapy but it is a way to share thoughts and information.

About me

I have a Ph.D. in Clinical-Child Psychology from the University of Alabama. My predoctoral internship was in pediatric psychology at the Duke University Medical Center and during graduate school I had clinical placements in a men’s prison for 18-22 year olds, a children’s residential treatment program, outpatient mental health clinics, and university medical clinics. Since becoming a licensed psychologist in Alabama in 2008 I have provided therapy and conducted assessments in private practice settings and was an Assistant Professor of Psychology at a university for six years, leaving academia to focus more on consulting and writing.
