These are great points, really helpful for keeping things in perspective. Prom isn't a thing here in New Zealand but presumably a prom is for the students to enjoy, not an event to inflict on them if they don't want to go.

Totally agree. My son didn’t go to middle school prom as he’d only been there a term and thought he’d made friends already he decided it wasn’t for him. We had moved him from another school because of bullying and though I really wanted him to go to prom as I saw it as him being part of something when he’d suffered so much rejection, that was my hang up and not how he saw it at all. He’s very independent minded and I am really proud of that so you have to love all the ways that manifests. I do think for a lot of young men and boys, dressing up, social posturing and dancing etc are not really their idea of fun anyway.
